In 1989 I started to apply to US colleges to do another grad degree.
As part of the biz I did a GRE nr the end of the year.
I submitted my forms to maybe 20 colleges but only
the people at Caltech noticed my GRE score matched the date.
Someone there quipped that must make it easy to remember.
I said something like "that's what I thought". Predicatably, they laughed.
So did I. But totally different reason. :)
I had figured a lot of people esp at Caltech would get a max score
on their tests so you had to go one better and get a number
intentionally just to show you could. The GRE folks try to make
it difficult by giving you 2 versions of the 3 test papers and then
picking which ones to use to get your total. They also have "test questions"
on each paper that are there for their purposes and dont count in the final
score. They are easy to spot.
So by leaving chunks of key papers blank you can force them to add
up the questions you want and get the score you're looking for. There may
be neater ways, but that's what I came up while I was sitting the test.
It was a spur of the moment kinda practical joke.
By the time I got the reject letter from Caltech I had an accept
from SUNY with a full scholarship. I had submitted there
because the ratio of library books to students (the basic numbers for every
college were helpfully listed in the thick GRE handbook) was 2nd
only to Cornell and I have a thing about canyons.
Anyway. I had a great time in NYs. Thanks for asking.
